Hey guys,

I’ve been getting tons of nice comments, messages and e-mails lately, all of which I appreciate very much and really motivates me to keep making music.
Although I still read every single comment, message and e-mail that I get, replying to all of them takes a lot of time so I wrote this FAQ to provide you with a quick and detailed response to the questions that I get asked most often. For all other questions that aren’t answered on this page or YouTube, feel free to send a message, leave me a comment or send an e-mail to info@CSGuitar89.com. Thanks!

May I use your cover for my own video?

First of all, I am really glad that you like my covers so much that you would like them for your own video! For any non-commercial use, i.e. you're not making money off of the media that you're using the song for, you may use my covers as you please. The only thing I'd like to ask is that you credit me either in the video itself or in the description with a link to my channel. For any commercial projects I am not able to give you permission to use my work, unfortunately since I do not hold the exclusive rights to any of the covers that I have done.

Could you send me MP3, tabs or backing track?

You can download the MP3s, tabs and backing tracks of all of my songs from the 'MP3s' 'Tabs' or 'Backing Tracks' pages of this website.

Do you take requests?

Although I always love to hear new music that you guys send me, I do not take requests. At the end of 2016, I retired the CSGuitar89 project meaning that I will no longer create covers and upload new content to this YouTube channel. As mentioned previously however, I love hearing new music so feel free to leave a comment or send me a message.

May I post my own cover with your backing track?

Sure! Just as long as you are not using it for commercial purposes and won’t mind mentioning me as the creator of the backing track it’s totally fine with me. I’m always flattered when people record their own versions of my covers and I really enjoy listening to them.

Which guitars are you playing?

You can find info on all the guitars that I use in the video description of each video. More detailed information can be found in the ´Gear´ section of my website.

How long have you been playing?

I got my very first guitar on February 14, 2004. If you would like to know more about my playing history, then please check the Bio section on this website.

What’s your setup, what gear do you use and how do you record your guitars?

You can find a detailed description of everything I use to make my covers and how I record them in the ‘Gear´ and ´Recording´ sections of my website, or you can watch my ´Gear Tour´ or ´Recording Guide´ videos on my YouTube channel.

What kind of amp do you use?

For my covers I don't use a real, physical amp, but rather a virtual amp simulation from Line 6 called POD Farm. This piece of software is a plugin with lots of digital amps and effects. I really like to work with the amp simulation, because you have lots of flexibility and you can change the tone even after you have recorded a track. The amps that I use the most for my guitar sound are different simulations of the Mesa Dual Rectifier and the Ampeg SVT series for my bass sound.

What software do you use to edit the audio and video?

To record, mix and master the songs, I use GarageBand from Apple. It's a really simple program and it’s very easy to use. It has all the basic options that I need nothing more or less. I use iMovie HD from Apple to edit my videos because it's easy and fast to use. I don't do a lot of editing though. I just try my best to get a good shot and cut the video to match the audio track.

Why do you hold the pick with your thumb and middle finger?

I don't really know why I play the way that I do, but it just feels more natural to me to hold the pick with my middle finger and thumb. I don't believe that there is a 100% right way to hold a pick or to do a certain technique for that matte. In the end, everyone is different and you should do whatever feels most comfortable to you. However, the 'technically correct' way is usually the most efficient way to perform a specific technique and I advise you to use that as a starting point.

Do you use any effects?

I use various effects on my recordings. For my rhythm sound I generally use a noise suppressor, booster, compressor and reverb. If I play leads, I just add some more reverb and delay. For the clean sound I use the same effects as I do with the rhythm sound, but I sometimes add chorus, phaser or flanger to make the sound a bit more interesting. Check the Tones section for a complete description of how I create my tone and download the presets I made.

How do you figure out these songs?

Most of the time I have a midi file of the song that allows me to split the tracks, slow down the tempo or view what notes are being played. This makes it quite easy for me to figure out and tab the songs. I always try to figure the songs out by ear though since it improves your musical hearing and overall musicality, but it's nice to know I can always fall back on the midi file.

What tunings do you use?

I usually tune my guitars to standard tuning. However, I do use my seven and eight string guitars a lot for rhythm parts. The seven string has an added B below the low E string and the eight string has an extra lower string tuned to F#. For some songs I also used drop tunings; drop D on a six string guitar and drop A on the seven string. When I use alternate tunings, you can find the exact tuning in the tab.

Do you make your own tabs?

Yes, I always make my own tabs. For most of the songs that I cover there aren’t any tabs available or plus I usually write my own rhythm parts. I figure out the songs by ear so writing the tabs is not too hard and it helps me to memorize the songs. Also, I think a lot of fellow guitarists appreciate it if they can play along to the songs.

Could you please upload Guitar Pro tabs of your covers?

I'm really sorry, but I don't work with Guitar Pro. I definitely see why it would be useful since my normal tabs can be pretty confusing at times, but I don't really like to work with GP to say the least. It would also take me a lot more time to finish a cover since I would have to program the drums twice and also program my guitar tracks into Guitar Pro. I do my very best to make my tabs as complete, clear and understandable as possible but I know they can be hard to understand with all the different tracks. Thanks for understanding.
