About me

Hi, I'm Casper, also known as CSGuitar89. I was born on June 3, 1989 in The Netherlands and I grew up in a city called Almere. Besides playing the guitar I like to listen to lots of music and play video games.

About my playing

The very first time I picked up an instrument was for a project in music class back in 2004, where I played a bass guitar. We rehearsed a simple song and I became really interested in playing an instrument. After playing on my friend's electric guitar a few times I decided it was time for me to take lessons and buy a guitar. That's where it all started for me.

I bought my guitar on valentines day 2004 and loved the instrument from the beginning. The first guitar I got was a Squier Bullet Strat with a little Marshall MG10 amp, both of which I still own. I started off by learning some chords and easy melodies from pop songs. When I got a little better I learned the riffs, leads and solos from the songs I liked to listen to. Learning different styles and songs really helped develop my playing.

My music teacher taught me all kinds of different things from chords and technique to scales and music theory. I took lessons for about 1,5 years until my teacher moved to Brazil. I looked for a new guitar teacher, but I found that I had enough discipline and knowledge to study on my own.

After a few months of playing, I decided to form a band with some friends from school. Most of the time we played covers, but we were also working on some original material. We did a few talent shows and gigs at school and even performed at a club. In the picture below you can see me on stage at my very first gig. I learned a lot from it and we had lots of fun. It's really something that I would like to recommend to fellow guitar players. When we played together for about two years we found that we were too many musical differences and we split up. I continued to make original music with the bass player of that band. We still work together on various projects, from which we hope to release some songs on YouTube soon.

I don't really know how I got the idea of starting my own YouTube channel and post videos on the internet. I think I saw some videos of other guitarists and I wanted to try if I could do the same. I also wanted to publish some of my music to see what other people thought about my playing and find out if I could improve certain aspects of my playing.

In the future I will try to expand my YouTube channel and hope to receive as much support as I do now. Maybe I'll also start a few other projects and record some original music. Furthermore, I aim to develop my playing some more and try to raise my skills to a new level.

I hope you got a good impression on how I started my musical journey and got to the point where I am at now. If you have any questions left about my biography or playing history after reading this, you can always send me an e-mail at biography@csguitar89.com

I appreciate lots of different musical styles, but I listen to metal most of the time because of the technicality, great musicianship, complexity, power, awesome melodies, brutal sound and pure aggression. Within the genre I prefer progressive metal and all the variations or combinations with other styles.

I really became interested in metal after hearing Iron Maiden, which was at about the same time as I picked up the guitar. I was impressed by the fast rhythm playing, harmonised leads and solo's. Iron Maiden, among other bands, really motivated me in the beginning to practice hard to become a better player.

As I grew older and a became a better player I started to search for more complexity and technicality in music. Thanks to a friend I was introduced to progressive music. He played me some Dream Theater, which is still one of my favourite bands today. Over the years I found that my taste in music has become a lot heavier and I started listening to all kinds of crossovers with progressive metal. That's when I discovered bands like Scar Symmetry, Meshuggah and Opeth.

Here is a list of some of my favourite bands and artists that influenced my playing the most, so you can see where I get, or tried to get, my style from:
